Faith it ’til you Make it

by Amy on August 10, 2010

When you set an intention for something, what you’re really stating is Who you will Be when your intention transpires.

In other words, it’s never about just having the new career or thriving within that relationship or experiencing the wealth or health you intend. It’s about Who you get to Be with those things.

It’s not the verb—it’s the noun.

Too often, we ignore our intentions when we make decisions. We have a long list of goals and intentions, but then we make decisions based on Who we Are today, pre-intention.

Try making choices from Who you will Be instead of Who you Are today.

For example, if your intention is to be a successful, in-demand actor, what would that person choose? The successful actor would opt for the top notch headshots. Who you Are today might play it safe and skimp with the economy package from the less talented photographer. Which choice is moving you closer to Who you will Be?

Or maybe you’re a 170 pound woman who doesn’t exercise, but your intention is to be a healthy, leaner woman who exercises regularly. What are you going to do tomorrow morning? Focus on Who You Are today and make your decision from there? Or shift your focus to Who you will Be and make the choice that person would make?

There are always excuses for not doing something today. You pass up that trip of a lifetime because there’s too much to do and not enough money; you choose to not invest in your own personal growth because the kids need your full attention and it feels selfish.

Ask yourself: Are these the choices the person I want to Be would make? Always make your choices from that place, not from the overly-reality-focused-limited-viewpoint place of now.

Choices made from Who you Will Be propel you there. Who you Are is actually just a function of your choices and beliefs. Make the choices the person you want to Be would make, and you’re already there.

Some people would call this “Fake it ‘til you make it”. But it doesn’t feel fake to me. It feels like holding to an intention for change, which always requires a little faith. I’d call it “Faith it ‘til you make it”.

I love when I come across something I haven’t read that’s been around for awhile and speaks to me IN the moment1 Thank you! I love the beingness of life. And when I’m caught up in the doingness I’ll just remind myself by reading this.

Thanks!

Awesome, Rita! Beingness vs. Doingness is right on….we’re human beings not human doings, so it makes perfect sense that we’d create as much or more by being than by doing. Thanks for your comment!
